Honestly, if the guys looked better I doubt there would be more male characters in the game either way.
|
I haven't seen too many male characters in games, at all, looking good enough to be my free choice. For example, the all-manly Kratos looks quite decent in GoW 3, but simply because he fits the game, and because the player gets used to his appearance (facial expression, especially) after two hours of playing. When compared to female characters in game (Aphrodite, Poseidon Princess), his model just isn't looking too good - while Aphrodite and her, hmm, friends are idealised as well, they still appear more realistic, eye-catching and so forth - even to my fiancee.
That dissoinance is even more visible in MMOs. From Lineage 2, to Runes of Magic, to Aion, to Guild Wars, there's always something wrong with the male models. Be it they're too idealised, too perfectly looking, making them look transsexual, not to invoke the word 'gay'; be it they're too manly, overmasculine even, like Kratos, being more laughable than enjoyable to play with; be it the mix of those two, probably the worst option.
It surely has something to do with the mass media that flood us with images of beautiful, photoshopped women all the time. We got used to the appearance of idealised females, even with some artifical touch to them, while there's no male ideal of beauty (or attractiveness, or handsomeness, or 'decent-lookness' for their role in the game...), especially one that'd be easily applicable for a computer game.
Probably the only male character from video games i'm willingly playing - and enjoy the visualisation, most of the animations, expressions and so on - is Geralt from The Witcher. Vesemir from the first Witcher is cool - and fits his role, not to mention the book description. Varric from Dragon Age 2 looks fine, at least his looks fits his personality and the role he plays in the game.
Still, it's much easier for Isabela to be appealing for - both male and female - players than for Varric to be appealing (credited?) for either.

I know i'm picking a troll track of an idiot, but...
It's actually the other way around. If your character of choice looks like Kratos, if you enjoy staring at male butt for hours every day, then there might be something 'wrong' with you. Preferring to look at female curves is quite normal, even for females - the truth is, the argument of 'i'm a female so i play female chars' is only one amongst many, other being eg. 'female chars are made/animated/... better'.
That said, if i may choose to, i always pick females.

I always found that odd, actually. Sure, it's normal to become fond of one's character, to like it, to treat it like a virtual pet or somethin - and it doesn't matter how it looks like, what that character is. However, identifying oneself with his avatar is beyond me.
Maybe i got the necessary distance by playing lots of pen and paper RPGs. Yet even then, when i roleplay - or, maybe, especially then - i prefer to play as someone different than i am, including different looks, different outlook on the world, different sex even. It's also reflected in my naming habit - i never name my characters with my real name or the nickname i use here and there, it's always something different, something personal for that character, not for me.

Ironically I find it easier to immerse myself with a female character, despite being male. So they end up female.
Save the ones that have really bad armor sets. I'm looking at you, Paragon. At least the Assassin gets ancient armor...

I don't know how I do it, but in 6 years and all female characters, I have never been hit on by other players who think I am a female. I think some of you are making a big deal about a very rare issue, or you spend way too much time in outposts...

When I roll a PvP Nec I always go for female. Male necromancers have terrible posture and gnarled necks.

There was a poll about this a long time ago and I think the Majority of Female Players ran just Female characters.
The other options were a lot closer but I think males playing both sexes were the largest section.
You might be able to find that poll if interested.

You know, just because someone plays as a male does not mean they stare at the character's butt. That's kind of weird to imply such a thing.

agreed. I hardly look at my own character because I'm too busy looking at the entire screen while I play. I doubt people who spend the entire game staring at the 2% of the screen occupied by the character ever actually accomplish anything.

He was quoting another person......
And at the risk of stating the obvious, the games camera angle is generally from "behind" the char, so mostly you will see the butt/back of your player, if you were to focus on the char, which most people do not. No-one is "implying" anything.

By having characters that are female exclusively, I don't have to alt-tab or switch monitors to fap.
Haters gonna hate.

The female shape is more pleasing on the eyes than the males. Theres nothing wrong with having a character of the opposite sex unless you are actually telling people you really are that sex in real life when your not. Then things smell like Buffalo Bill

Wow, yep... 50% (over 1200 votes) went with I'm Male, with both Female and Male Characters
which I would have voted as well.

You got my post out of the context, as it was in reply to another post.
To reword it - implying that something's 'wrong' with me, aka coming outta the closet, just because i roll female characters is silly. Especially that, if we're talking about having 'issues', it's much more possible if you roll a male char being a male - one may either enjoy looking at other males' butts or one may need to pump up his masculine ego by having a muscular, strong, Kratos-like, or Aragorn-like, or Legolas-like avatar in game.
It actually reminds me of one of Friends' episodes, where Joey wore female underwear just because he feels fine and secure about his malehood.

Furthermore, if they also say that the character actually represents them... it may not be OTHER males' butts they (possibly) enjoy seeing.... it's THEIR OWN. LOL!

I do that with my male and it's one of the reasons I feel weird playing a female. Because I envision myself as the person in the game and with the way ele's and mesmer's walk I feel like a complete ditz while I'm playing mine. So in essence, I am roleplaying as someone different than I am, with a different outlook on the world (course that goes along with how the gameplay goes, story, etc.) and a different name (it's me, but not me..I don't want it to relate to the real world).
But I can't put myself inside a female's shoes to roleplay.

it's not about preference. it's about staring at an ass (regardless of gender) when there are much more important things to stare at.
